One Day at a Time

A GREAT BIRTHDAY!

There was encouragement and surprises on Monday. I got called from friends both far and near. There were also surprise parties and visits.

It started at work with our secretaries making a terrific brunch for my birthday. My favorite snacks and deserts covering the breakroom table, even strawberry shortcake. Many phone calls and emails came during the day.

Monday, I went to school before 7:00 a.m. so I could leave by 5:00 p.m. to get home for Cherissa's plans to have chili at my house. I had not had company for awhile so I wanted to make sure everything was cleaned up. When I got home it was her, Meagan and Russell getting dinner ready and the house was perfect.

The surprises kept coming when 44 friends, all of 9 of my kids and their spouses, and all 7 grand kids showed up for dinner! 60 smiling faces coming to see me for a surprise. The street was covered with cars for the entire block as friend after friend came by for chili, hugs and words of encouragement! Our house was filled people, laughter and fun, just the way we loved it! Even Mitch and his family drove over to see me on my birthday and they stayed until almost 11:oo p.m.

In Northwest Arkansas, you can almost count on perfect weather on my birthday or Columbus Day which was on the same day this year. My Birthday was a great day with lots of people sent from the Lord to show me how much they care about me.

Birthday Tradition

Today is my birthday. I have never had much of an expectation of presents or parties for my birthday. Vicki did have a birthday party with friends for my 41st (we weren't organized enough to make the 40th on time.) and for my 50th birthday. I can't remember Vicki ever getting me a present, except that we were always doing something together. This is the first birthday in 38 years that I have not shared with her. I will miss her "Happy Birthday" start to the day.

I am looking forward to having family over tonight for dinner. Cherissa is good about organizing such things to help fill in the gaps and because she is like that. Thoughtful, just like her mom...

Hall Of Fame Night

Last week I had the honor of introducing and speaking about a former athlete at the annual Owasso Rams Hall of Fame Banquet. It was a very emotional time for me to get to be back in Owasso with coaches, administrators, teachers, community friends, church friends, and athletes that I was so close to for 17 years in my work there.

The event was about 4 hours long with long visits before and after the banquet started. There was the meal, a highlight videos and then the introductions and inductions of the outstanding athletes/people that were being recognized.

I got to speak about the outstanding male athlete of the 90's and his amazing high school, college, and personal accomplishments. It was a night of many memories. It was a night with former coaches and friends that we seemed to pick right up where we left off. I really did not feel alone. There was lots of kindness and grace to me. Also, lots of smiles.

Teacher Appreciation Night - For VIcki!

On Tuesday night, Siloam Springs High School opened it's new PAC (Panther Activity Center). The new arena is a terrific new gym with large high definition video boards. The first athletic event in the PAC was a home volleyball game which featured teacher appreciation night. Before the varsity game, each player on the team chooses to recognize their favorite teacher. That teacher is invited to come to the Volleyball, to be introduced, have an appreciation letter read by the announcer that was written by player, and receive a gift from the player. The invited favorite teacher does not know until they are announced which player has selected them.

Tuesday night, a high school player picked VICKI as a their favorite teacher! They read a touching story of appreciation of what an impact that Vicki made on them when they were in elementary school. Cherissa, Max, Maggie and Alexander joined me on the court to received Vicki's recognition and gift. The player's letter was read and the volleyball player came to give us a gift. It was a touching moment. I was grateful for the night.

MONUMENT PURCHASE

Today, I went by myself to look at Monuments or Tombstones. I have not been led to do that until this past week. I have looked on line several times to see different styles of Monuments, so I had a pretty good idea what I wanted to do. I have also been saving money for the purchase.

Months before Vicki passed away, Vicki and I talked about getting her a tombstone. Remember, she told me what she wanted on her tombstone when talking about the priorities of her life, but that was before she had cancer. After getting sick, she said that she did not care much about what tombstone we got for her. She did say that she didn't want flower holders because she did not have an expectation for any family to have to come to put out or maintain flowers at a grave site. She reminded me that she is not there.

Still, I want to properly mark her grave, properly honor her, and I felt I was ready to get this done today. I noticed tonight when I was walking in the cemetery that her temporary marker is gone, but I didn't know that until after I purchased her Monument. It will take about 6 weeks to produce, deliver and set up the new Monument.

Double Monument purchase. I will set it up where maybe my kids won't have to do this again.

I have been very busy with the start of school and with helping finish our facilities along with our normal busy fall work schedule.

I am also now teaching two adult studies each week whick requires much preparation. This past week, I was teaching about being in the Lord's army and about wearing the Armor of God as we work through a Joshua studey. I shared exerts from one of Vicki's final letter to me.

School Dedication

There was a New High School Dedication Ceremony and Celebration that drew hundreds of people last Saturday. My own family in town was good enough to come tour the school and to share in the experience with me. They also got to see where their own kids will go to school, Lord willing. Max has started kindergarten this week and his graduating class will be 2024 right at this place!

I was thankful that I have family and friends that came to enjoy the special day and memory together.

Brick Paving

Our High School Adopters sponsored a "Brick Paving" at the new high school to raise money to support purchasing a new Panther Statue. There was one brick purchased and laid in Vicki's memory by friends and other bricks were purchased for our kids and nephew who graduated from SSHS. I, also, purchased a brick for Vicki and me in memory of our time as teacher and coach at SSSD together.

I have about another month of finish work with the athletic facilities at the new school while working on our normal school responsibilities. Although we are substantially done, there is still much detail work to finish our athletic area. The academic side is mostly operational with some finish work and technology work still going on. Still, today was a great first day of school at our new high school.

One of the things I love about teaching is that there is a new beginning each fall. Each new school year brings a renewed hope for the year and the kids.

Vicki's visit to the New High School

One of the huge jobs our administrative staff has been working on for three years is developing, equipping and preparing to move into a new high school. The stress, time and effort to do this on top of our regular jobs has been enormous. (That is why I have not been on the blog lately.) I started sketching out gym and field house designs on our kitchen table while Vicki had chemo in July 2008. Many many nights while she was sleeping during those chemo nights, coaches would be around our table at home talking and drawing plans. With the hundreds of doctor visits and missed days with Vicki along with the hundreds of hours of tours of other schools and meetings to work on our new high school it has been all we could do to keep up our normal tasks. The days and weekend have been long for three years.

The pay off now is a state of the art facility that our community is extremely proud of. We open the new high school tomorrow at a dedication ceremony to celebrate a magnificent new high school.

In July 2008, Vicki told me she didn't think she would ever see this day as I was drawing plans and ideas on our kitchen table. She was so happy to get to sit in the gym area back on Jan. 17th of this year as the construction phase took a big turn toward a finished product.

It is hard to believe that the pictures below are less than two months before Vicki would pass away. Yet, on that cold January day, Vicki wanted to go see where I would be working this year. She walked through the walls surrounding my new office. She sat out on the floor and bleacher areas of the new gym She was so happy, because she got to be there at that stage and she could see it coming together. She never complained about the late days at work or the time at our table that I had to work at night working on this project. She was proud we could have a part of such an important piece of our community future.

I wish she could be there tomorrow for the grand opening. She has a memorial brick at the high school that has been donated in her memory. Her memory will be with me too.

Movie Night

I went to one movie alone after Vicki passed away and I have not been back since. It just wasn't fun going alone. Last night, Jon and Nikki invited me to go to dinner and a movie with them in Rogers. They asked what movie I wanted to see and it really didn't matter much to me. I was glad to be invited. It was a fun night going to a movie again with friends. Pretty nice stuff for a young couple to think about asking me to go with them last night.

Spice of Life

Family... I won't say it was the same as sharing the moment with Vicki. It was the first time to hold a new baby and gather for a photo with all the grand kids by myself, but it was still good. It was a blessing. Noise, clutter, busy, making messes, all a terrific parts of having family together. I loved having everyone home for the weekend. It is such a better time than having a clean quiet house alone. The games, food, laughter, play, talks were all fun. Kind of wish there could be a baby come along more often... (Easy for me to say.)

1000 Water Ballons

This weekend, we had much of our family together for the first time since Vicki passed away. We gathered to celebrate new life and a new future in Alexander, Cherissa and Lucas' newborn baby boy. I am thankful that our family gathers quickly to celebrate such events. You have to work at family and they give their best to enjoy each other's milestones.

I got to see all of my 7 grand kids together on Saturday. Larry and Suzie came to pick up Brandon, who has been staying with me for a week. And, Carol ran the show. She was determined that our first time back together since the funeral would be fun. She went to Wal-Mart and bought water guns, water toys and big bubble making machines. She also bought and filled 1000 water balloons! That took two days! She wanted to have everyone laughing and playing war with water balloons, and it happened.

The yard was filled with laughter and fun. The kitchen was filled with BBQ and the family celebrated a new baby with lots of pictures together. Alexander was passed around as children played in the outdoor pool on the back porch that Carol bought for the little kids.

There were a few tears as Alexander was held when thoughts and talk turned to missing Vicki during this fun, but there was also much thanks for family and for a new little baby. I was thankful to see Carol healing and to see her help the rest of us to heal.

Wish you could have seen the joy of throwing water balloons at each other. Young and old had a blast!

Birth Of A New Grandson

Yesterday afternoon, Cherissa and Lucas had a new baby boy at the Siloam Springs Memorial Hospital. Alexander James Roebuck, was born weighing 8lb. 4oz. at about 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. Cherissa and Alexander are doing great!

Lucas and Cherissa are very private about releasing the name of a child before the child's birth. It is a carefully guarded secret. Yet, they told Vicki during the last two weeks of Hospice Care that the baby's name would be Alexander. Vicki never told anyone, but she knew before she passed away. Vicki loved hearing news about having a new grandchild and she loved even more seeing a new grand baby. Vicki was always so demonstrative in her excitement about a new baby, our children will always remember that about their mom.

Carol, Vicki's sister, met Cherissa at the hospital at 5:00 a.m. yesterday and was with Cherissa until right before the baby was born. This time, it was Carol that stood just outside the hospital room door, during the final minutes before birth, listening for the first cry. It seemed to me that Carol was enjoying the moment for Cherissa and for herself. I suspect we all had memories of how Vicki enjoyed that position. It was the spice of life for her.

I gave thanks for grandchild number seven, for the blessing of new life, for the blessing of a loving family, and for Alexander to know God's Grace. I wondered if Jesus had told Vicki about little Alexander, and if Vicki was doing her little celebration dance.

Carol's Touch

Much of the time, help comes for a new mom after the birth of a new baby. Carol came to help Cherissa before this new baby is born this week. Carol has taken care of Max and Maggie to give Cherissa as much rest as possible and to allow Cherissa to do final home touches before going to the hospital. Carol is such a joyful and creative with kids. She set up this water park on our back patio and the kids loved it! I also enjoyed the company and noise.

Cherissa is due now and Carol has been a blessing to Cherissa. Carol is staying with Megan and Tyler and has also babysit Roman for them. I think it has been healing for Carol and comforting to Cherissa for Carol to here at this time helping as Vicki would have during the finals days before and after the birth of her daughter's baby.

Tomorrow, we expect baby Roebuck to be born...

Laura and Jacob are a couple that I have a lot of confidence in. I think they impact others, they love the Lord and they are givers. As you may remember, Laura made the memorable eulogy at Vicki's funeral and Jacob is a kind and talented man of integrity that I respect.

Jacob is a movie producer. He writes and produces films that entertain, edify and inspire. He has a great story inspired by true stories from summer CAMP for foster kids. I have chosen to support this effort to tell a worthwhile story and to produce inspirational movies. There are few movies produced today I could support, but I believe in Jacob's mission.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Inspired by true stories from Royal Family Kids Camps, CAMP is a feature film about learning to love kids who have been abused and neglected.

In the United States there are over 150,000 kids ages 6 - 12 in the foster care system.
Many are victims of terrible abuse and severe neglect leaving them scarred physically, emotionally and spiritually.
All are in need of unconditional love.
These kids live in our cities and towns and we don't know it.

It is our hope our film CAMP will:

1. Inspire adults to get involved in foster kids lives.
2. Support camps for foster kids by providing a tool to raise volunteers for their camps.
3. Inspire churches and other organizations to begin a camp for their community.
4. Show how camp is an effective tool for changing lives.

Synopsis

Eli's life is nightmare. His mother is a drug addict who neglects his care, and his transient father floats into and out of their lives. Eli is filled with rage from the physical abuse he has received from his father but he longs for his love and approval. On his Eli’s 10th birthday Eli is taken to the hospital by police who respond to a domestic disturbance call. Eli is removed from his home and is placed in Locustwood, a facility little better than a youth prison. In this environment Eli spirals downward, becoming an angry and scared creature.

In the same town lives Ken. A yuppie investment banker, Ken has fine taste in automobiles, wine and women. When the company he works for is wiped out and his job is lost, Ken is forced to move in with his mom. In spite of providing a loving home, he despises her because of her penny-pinching ways.

Ken is lured by his beautiful and resourceful high school acquaintance Tammie to sign up to be Eli’s counselor at a summer camp for abused and neglected kids. Eli is determined to ruin camp for everyone, especially Ken. Ken hasn’t spent time with a ten-year old since he was ten and, after the first day at camp, realizes he is in over his head and plans to give up. But ex-marine and veteran counselor Samuel challenges Ken to let go of his selfish ways for just one week so an ungrateful Eli can stay at camp.

Over the course of the next couple days, Ken’s heart is broken as he learns of the terrible abuse Eli has suffered. Eli slowly opens up to Ken as Ken starts to love Eli unconditionally. Eli begins to have hope.

An unauthorized visit from Eli’s father to camp threatens to send everything spiraling out of control. Now Ken must decide if he is willing to sacrifice his future so Eli will understand the meaning of unconditional love.

The Plan

• Shoot the film at camp in New Mexico (Final location TDB) in Mid-September.
• Finish Post-Production (editing, sound, music) in January 2011.
• Premiere the film in LA and New Mexico in March 2011.
• March through May, run the film in 100+ markets where there is a Royal Family Kids Camp like the one that inspired the film.
• Release to video Fall 2012

Here For Baby Time

Carol is back to help Cherissa. The baby is due this week. Cherissa has been missing her mom during this time and Cherissa has been very tired. Carol has been staying with Meagan and Tyler each night, but going over to help Cherissa with the kids during the day, so Cherissa can rest. Cherissa even had Carol go to the doctor with her this past week.

The Doctor says Cherissa is ready and that she will have the baby this next week. Carol will stay here through the early times with the baby to help. I think it is helpful to Cherissa and it seems to be healing to Carol. Carol has been extremely joyful this week helping Cherissa. I know it pleases her to serve, and it must be gratifying to be able to share in the part Vicki would have enjoyed so much.

Thanks also to Billy (Her husband) for giving Carol this time with Cherissa

Backstage Pass @ A.I.

Carol, (Vicki's sister) Jamey, Jonna, and myself went to the American Idol concert in OKC on Tuesday night. There was another good friend at the concert that had backstage passes to visit and take pictures with the American Idol top 11 after the concert. In the past, Vicki and I have had fun with this good friend for years in teasing about who could pick the next American Idol winner. We had our own private contest and predictions together. It has been a fun competition each week to see who was right about the contest results. This year, our friend was able to get backstage passes for the OKC concert and I was invited to bring Carol, Jamey and Jonna too. This was a generous and fun gift to us. Our friend could have given these prized tickets to many, but we were asked to go. I think it is because I have lost so many friendly bets over the years on A.I. results that there was a pity factor going for me. (American Idol watching started with me and Vicki when she got sick. It was something we could do for the past three years together that did not take lots of energy for her. Vicki even watched this year into the first few days of her hospice care.)

After the concert, the American Idol stars were incredibly gracious in giving their time to visit, to answer questions, and to take pictures with those that had passes to see them. When visiting with them, it became even more impressive how talented and confident they were on stage at such a young age, and yet they seemed humble and giving in person.

What a fun night! It brought a smile to my face during the concert to think about how much Vicki enjoyed music and in watching A.I. together. It was fun sharing this FUN experience with Carol and with our Siloam friends that came with us.

American Idol Concert

Vicki and I were watching American Idol this year when she went into hospice care. She even wanted to watch a show the first week home from the hospital. We enjoyed doing that together.

I bought 4 tickets to go to the American Idol Concert in OKC for last night. I invited Jonna and Jamey from Siloam to go with me and then I met Carol, Vicki's sister, in OKC for us all to go to the concert together. Carol came back with us and she is staying with Tyler and Meagan this week in anticipation of Cherissa having her baby. Carol flew to Dallas and her brother's wife Suzie brought her to OKC for the concert and to get a ride with me.

Vicki would have loved tonight. The concert was great. The friends were great. The best part is that we got back stage passes to meet the American Idol singers!!!! We were allowed to take pictures and visit briefly with each singer.

This American Idol year is over. I wish Vicki could have finished with me tonight, but it was a fun night with friends and family in OKC.. I smiled a lot at the concert and with the fun stories we told on the trip up and back tonight.

Small Group

One of the changes for my life has been to join an adult small group on Sunday nights for bible study. Before Vicki's illness, we worked in youth work each Sunday night. During her illness, she often did not feel well enough to do go consistently.

After focusing on FCA, Youth work, and caring for Vicki, I felt at loss about what was next in ministry after Vicki passed away. It seems that for now, the Lord has given me a window to teach adults. I have been teaching on Wed. night at church and I have been able to teach a small group lesson a couple of times when Dan, our terrific small group teacher, has been gone. I am grateful for this season to focus on study and teaching. The Lord has spoken to me each time.

Last night, it was fun to host a group of 18 friends from church as we discussed 1 Peter 4: 7-12. This scripture is about life perspective and challenges in how to finish by giving Glory to God in the was we pray, love, speak, and use a gift given to us by the Lord. This is a scripture that was shared with me and Vicki by one of Vicki's last guests in hospice care, when a friend came to wash Vicki's feet as an act of love. I have thought about that scripture often since.

Last night our church small bible study group of friends were a blessing to me again.

1 Peter 4:7-12

⁷ The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray. ⁸ Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. ⁹ Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. ¹⁰ Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. ¹¹ If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

Smoke on Cherry Street - Best in Tulsa!

Vicki and I thought that Mitch was blessed to be a part of something special at Smoke on Cherry Street. The restaurant has been open just a little over 6 months and this week Smoke on Cherry Street and/or its outstanding chef, Erik, were recognized in 5 categories in an URBAN TULSA article. Mitch is very excited and thankful for these honors. Our family is celebrating this great report with him.

Vicki loved eating there. She always appreciated outstanding food. She thought Smoke on Cherry Street was special. It was the last restaurant she ate at (3 times) before she passed away. I know she was proud of Mitch, Erik and the other partners at Smoke on Cherry Street.

Chef Erik Reynolds started a fire with Smoke on Cherry Street, and his restaurant pretty much burned up the food categories in this year's ABoT Awards. 123 DAYS AND NIGHTS

123 days. Feels like years sometimes. But, I have had a couple of unexpected boosts the last few days. I got a call from Marylin and Mike in Owasso and I had a email with prayers from Brenda in Owasso that were both very encouraging. Mostly, I have seen the Lord bring me more peace and calm the last week through his word.

Today is 4 months since Vicki passed away. I am learning much. It is a battle for the mind sometimes. It is about trust, rest , patience and peace. I have to lean on Jesus and not so much on Vicki as before. I am trying to stay still for awhile to learn to hear his voice better and to see where he leads. I am trying to see what the path the Lord has for me next, not confident about that yet. Waiting....

I have been focused on Ps. 25 this week. Also the lesson from Joshua 3 spoke to me. Both brought me more joy and confidence.

Saturday Changes

Last night, I enjoyed going to Cherissa and Lucas to visit with Cheryl and Tony who have just moved back from Oregon. Three of Lucas brothers and their wives were also there. I really enjoy Keith, Jacob, and Joe along with their wives. We were missing Sam and Eric's families as they were out of town. We had a great dinner together and fun talks. I told Tony that one of the best things about Lucas marrying Cherissa was me getting to know and be with his family. I enjoy them a lot. I also went back today for a short visit at lunch.

Saturdays have become busy study days. Most of the day is spent studying for lessons that I am getting to teach at church. Around doing laundry and some other short basic Saturday chores, I am working on lessons from Joshua now. I am so thankful to be able to teach the Pastor's class at church on Wed. night and we are now doing a study of the book of Joshua.

Saturdays are pretty alone and quiet, which is a huge change from our past. But, this change has been allowed me to slow down and spend some extended time in study. That is good for me in this new life for now. It puts my mind on better things.

Traveling Experinece

We got back home last night at 11:30 p.m. and it is back to work this morning. I enjoyed riding back with Lucas and Cherissa's family. The vacation week was very busy with 4 stops in 9 days and 3,000 miles traveled by air and 1,400 miles in a car in 9 different states.

This vacation was my first travel alone since Vicki passed and it is a step I think that was good to take. Parts of the trip were very lonely, traveling alone in a car across Michigan and staying in hotels, but I had the time to pray during those times. Sometimes, I still felt alone even with people I love. However, on parts of the trip, I slept better than anytime since Vicki passed away. There were nights with family in Florida and in New Mexico where I realized that I had not stayed in a house with other people since the funeral days.

Every stop was good. Everybody was gracious to me. I loved visiting with so many friends and family on the vacation and I think I am better for it, except for a couple of extra pounds from the RICE experience. I got new energy from being with these people. I learned much from watching how to give grace, service and hospitality at each stop. The gentleness and thoughtfulness in Florida, Michigan, Chicago and Roswell was everywhere. I am thankful they all took time to share with me.

When I got home last night, the house was still very dark, quiet and lonely, but I think I am a little more ready to take the next steps ahead. Somehow, I think I healed some this week, even with the lonely parts of the travel. This week was the first time I have had to just slow down to really read, pray, think, plan, and be still since Vicki passed without the pace of work everyday.

Praise the Lord for those he has given to give to me and to pray for me. Thank you for grace.

RICE FINALE...

The RICE extravagance wraps up this morning. The planning and organization has been amazing to provide so many meals, activities, housing and fun for over 50 people (24 children under the age of 11.)

The Fourth of July Holiday was another jam packed RICE day of fun and fellowship that included:

1. Early breakfast for the runners.

2.. Early July 4th fun run (walking for some) through the park for the entire group on a course set out by Jeff in our group. This was not a city event but a RICE event!

3, Circle of friends (Men) in the lawn with morning debates and discussions about theology and politics. (No one got mad, even though there were many different points of view discussed.) The women also had their long talks, but the men did not know what they talked about. Men also spent time filling water balloons for the water park fun scheduled for later in the day.

4. Homemade country burritos for brunch. Sausage, eggs, potatoes, spices Etc. (Cowboy Bill and Polly quietly kept the outdoor stoves working until enough food was cooked to feed the 50+ people.)

5. Yard games.

6. Kids had a crafts time to make outfits to dress up as Indians.

7. More Frisbee Golf competitions at the city park.

8. Group singing of God Bless America and the Pledge of Allegiance. Group prayers to bless meals with everyone holding hands.

9. Group Photos.

10. Watermelon and cantaloupe on the lawn.

11. Watermelon seed spitting contest. ( I saw only a couple doing this.)

12. A short nap time for the little kids before water park games.

13. Snack time for children before water park games.

14. Children gathering, cracking and picking out pecan shells and nuts. (This actually was an activity that the kids loved doing for hours.) They liked cracking the shells and picking out pecans.)

15. Cowboy Bill's water games and water park in the back yard including water balloon fights, slip and slide, wading pools, sprinklers and sprinklers set up in the trees.

16. The men shucked the corn together in preperation of the evening BBQ.

17. Some indoor toys being played with on the sun deck of the house for some of the smaller children.

18. BBQ hamburgers and hot dogs for dinner with cooked corn on the cob, potatoes salad, fried squash, cucumbers and mushrooms.

19. Gallons of water, tea and pink lemonade consumed from the three large coolers that were refilled all day with ice and drink. (Cowboy Bill kept the trash emptied all day from cup and meal disposals.)

20. Close neighbors, local friends, and other church members drop by to join this huge group for dinner swelling the backyard party group. (That's just the way Cowboy Bill and Polly are: An open door of hospitality and love for others!)

21. Cowboy Bill demonstrating the use of a "bull whip" and how to make a loud popping noise at the crack of the end of the whip when he snapped it.

22. More homemade rocket launches with the crowd counting down from 10 before each blast off.

23. No TV and no video games for this group of kids on this holiday. Lots of sunscreen, group activities and play in the shaded backyard and under the big tent.

24. A card signing by adult family leaders trying to share their appreciation for the hours of selfless service that Bill, Polly, Laura, and Jacob have given to serve this huge group for over 3 days. (These cards will be given to them this morning.)

25. Brownys and apricot cobbler for everyone at the end of the day.

26. Watching the city fireworks show together.

26. Outdoor sponge baths with a hose for children and many indoor baths with look warm water for the kids at the end of the day.

27. More adult fellowship and cards after the kids went to bed.

28. Another 15 hours of fun, fellowship and food at RICE for the kids. The kids are sleeping well at night.

More Western Days @ RICE

Today was another full day of RICE fun. There was an early start with a Frisbee golf match. After breakfast, the entire group went together to church and we heard a terrific and convicting message by one of the members of our group that is in full time ministry. After lunch together, the men went to play ultimate frisbee at the park in 96 degree weather while the ladies had Cherrisa take pictures of all the kids. Later, there was dinner together and then there was a fun and energetic talent show in which all families and their children presented comedy, musical, dance or dramatic performances competing for prizes. When we got home, there was movies shown out on the lawn and there were card games being played inside after all the kids went to bed.

I told Cherissa that the family talent show at the church reminded me of another time in my generation when we made up activities for fun without electronics. Back then, kids had to use their imagination and they had to perform in front of others. The talent show seemed like that again.

We are having great times with family and friends in Roswell. I am thankful to be invited to.hang out with these cool young couples this weekend, '

RICE days in ROSWELL, N.M.

The next stop on this busy vacation is Roswell, New Mexico. I have gone from Tulsa to Panama City Florida; to Chicago; to Grand Rapids, Michigan; back to Chicago; and now to Roswell, New Mexico this week.

I am definitely burning up the frequent flyer miles! Saturday morning I left my Chicago Hotel at 6:00 a.m. to get to Roswell New Mexico early in the day. This last stop is to join Cherissa and Lucas for "RICE" , a huge holiday celebration with family and friends in Roswell.

"RICE" means Roebucks Initiate Creative Entertainmentt. RICE is an amazing 4 days of scheduled activities, games, food and fun. Jacob and Laura organized and planned the event. This year it is in Roswell. There are 49 people coming here from out of town to stay in Roswell for the 4 day RICE festival. This should be sheer fun until we drive back to Siloam Springs on Tuesday.

Yesterday, the 25 kids at the RICE event made adult supervised homemade rockets and then we went out to an old closed airport area to shoot rockets in the late afternoon. Next, we went to a Cowboy BBQ on a New Mexico ranch where all of the kids also got to ride a horse with Cowboy Bill. The day ended with the men playing a spades card game after the kids went to bed. The ladies stayed up late talking about old times. Most of the friends were JBU alumni together traveling from many states to keep their friendships growing.

Saturday was quite a day going from Chicago to New Mexico! Talk about a different world. I went from downtown Chicago to the high plains desert and very wild open spaces of New Mexico in just a few hours. I feel blessed that these young couples would invite me to join them and their families for this RICE holiday reunion and renewal!

Chicago Wedding Blessings

Friday night, I was honored to give the wedding prayer blessing at a wedding reception for an extremely sweet young lady that has a rich history with our family. I could not believe that Tammy asked me to pray at her wedding celebration. I was honored to be given the responsibility at her wedding.

Friday's stop was a big one. It is one of the big reasons that I came this direction this week. I drove to downtown Chicago from Grand Rapids, Michigan on Friday morning to attend Tammy's wedding. Tammy's family has been very close to us for many years, since we started going to church together at Bethel in Owasso. Jim and Linda, Tammy's parents, would get together with me and Vicki because our kids were near the same age, in the same church youth groups, and our kids were together often. Tammy went with us on some of our family vacations, and on church youth trips that we sponsored when she was in high school. She helped in our fireworks business and she was great friends with Cherissa.

Last night was a fun celebration with a amazing view of downtown Chicago from the wedding hotel site and our rooms. Jim and Linda were great hosts and I enjoyed visiting with Tina and Ryan too. I will be moving on again today, but last night's wedding will always be a special memory for me and this family will always be special to me.

My pictures of me with Tammy, the bride, did not turn out sharp enough to honor the bride, but she was sure a beautiful bride. Above is the terrific view from the hotel reception area near the end of the celebration. I was extremely honored to be asked to pray at her wedding celebration and to be at her wedding last night.
